HC orders BJP to change location of Kasba protest rally, questions necessity after arrests
On July 1, Congress Seva Dal organized a "Lalbazar Campaign" to mark the 144th birth anniversary of Bharat Ratna Dr. Bidhan Chandra Roy. The march was scheduled to begin from Lady Dufferin Hospital and end at Lalbazar Police Headquarters. Party workers and leaders assembled outside the hospital before proceeding towards their destination.
As the march reached Bowbazar Crossing, Kolkata Police intervened and stopped the rally. Officials cited the imposition of Section 163 of BNS in the area, which restricts the assembly of more than five people. Senior police officers present at the spot said, “Due to Section 163 of BNS being in force, no rally or public gathering is allowed in this zone.” The procession was not allowed to move forward beyond the Bowbazar point.
Following the halt, Congress workers sat down at the crossing and began a protest demonstration. They raised slogans targeting the state government and the police administration. The protest continued at the location under police monitoring. No incidents of violence or clashes were reported, and the gathering eventually dispersed.
